DeWonder Travel Balkans In-Depth Tour: Tracing the Historical Currents Along the Frontiers of Empires, Stepping into the Tranquil Poetry of Europe's Edge

In the Balkans, history is part of everyday life. From the medieval old towns along Croatia's Adriatic coast to the old quarters of Bosnia where mosques stand side by side with Catholic churches, every step is proof of civilisations converging. In the heart of Skopje you can see statues of Alexander the Great coexisting with socialist-era monuments; within the stone walls of the Bay of Kotor, you can hear ancient bells intertwining with the sound of motorbikes. Visit the site of the former Yugoslavia's most iconic Winter Olympics and feel the desolation left in the wake of past glory. Along the way, journey through Montenegro's high mountain gorges, climb Mostar's Old Bridge, and step into Kosovo—resilient despite the ravages of war—to converse with local youth and understand how the modern Balkans seek reconciliation and rebirth amid their scars.

This land holds more diverse cultures and stories than you might imagine. Within a single day you can go from a mosque to an Orthodox church, and then to a café in Austro-Hungarian style; from historic ruins to contemporary graffiti walls, from traditional mountain-village music to an underground electronic party. Every street and every stone wall carries the traces of shifting empires, yet at the same time radiates the creativity and free spirit of a new generation of young people. Here you will hear many languages interweave, and see different faiths and peoples coexisting in harmony while remaining distinct—everyday life is a feast of cultural collage. Wandering through the narrow alleys of the old quarters feels like stepping into a time tunnel where the Ottoman and Byzantine worlds intertwine; in the afternoon, sipping rich Turkish coffee at an open-air café, you may hear rock music and traditional flute melodies ring out at the same time. By night, art spaces reborn from ruins transform into party hotspots, where artists and travellers gather to share their creations, dreams, and memories.

Our exclusive itinerary not only visits Kosovo—a place seldom reached by tour groups—to get to know this last state to gain independence from Yugoslavia, but also offers the chance to personally enter a Bosnian home, sharing a meal and conversation with a family who survived the Siege of Sarajevo. You will explore in depth the stories behind this diverse culture, taste local sheep's-milk cheese and home-brewed spirits, and experience the warmth of the peoples of the Balkan nations.

Our in-depth tours average 8–14 people and never exceed 18 per group, ensuring the best group atmosphere and quality of activities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The climate of the six Balkan countries is dominated by continental and Mediterranean climates. Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia have colder winters and hot summers, with four distinct seasons. Montenegro, Albania, and Kosovo lie close to the Adriatic Sea; their coastal areas have hot, dry summers and mild winters, while inland regions are cooler. If travelling to mountainous areas in winter, be mindful of low temperatures and snowfall. We recommend preparing appropriate clothing according to the season.

  • Spring & Autumn (April–May / September–October): Warm during the day and slightly cool in the mornings and evenings; layered clothing is recommended.
  • Summer (June–August): Temperatures can exceed 30°C; bring sun protection and light clothing.
  • Winter (November–February): Some areas may see snowfall, so bring a warm coat and cold-weather clothing.
