Iraq carries a profound wealth of history and culture. Ancient Iraq was Mesopotamia, hailed as the "Cradle of Human Civilisation" — the world's earliest civilisations and cities, such as Sumer, Babylon and Assyria, were all born here. Later it blended the diverse cultures of Persia, the Ottoman Empire and more, and it is also the heartland of Shia Islam. Despite the ravages of war, the brilliance of this land's past has never been erased. Our in-depth itinerary takes you by boat across the Mesopotamian Marshes and into the ancient city of Babylon, offering a glimpse of the birthplace of civilisation and its former glory; we visit the Shia holy site of the Imam Ali Shrine and more, to experience the devout faith of Muslims; we tour the Martyrs' Monument that speaks of the memory of war, and witness first-hand buildings such as the Great Mosque of al-Nuri, which was severely damaged during the ISIS retreat and is now being rebuilt. In addition, we venture deep into the Kurdistan Autonomous Region and its capital Erbil, with an exclusive visit to a local non-profit organisation to explore local volunteer work and refugee rights, and exchange with a Kurdish family — hearing the story of how their people were divided among different nations, and seeing the free lives they are now able to lead.
