FAQ
What is the climate like in Mongolia?
Mongolia has short springs and summers (May to August) and long autumns and winters (September to the following April). During spring and summer, there is plenty of sunshine and warm, pleasant weather, making it the peak travel season. In autumn and winter, strong winds and heavy snow prevail, and lakes freeze over with thick ice—an entirely different sight to behold. Please note that Mongolia's weather is changeable in all four seasons, with frequent strong winds and large temperature differences between day and night, so be sure to keep warm.
Do I need a visa to travel to Mongolia?
No. Holders of Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR passports enjoy 14-day visa-free entry for travel to Mongolia.
What is the currency of Mongolia? Can I use electronic payment or credit cards?
Mongolia's official currency is the Mongolian Tugrik (MNT). Most shops accept credit cards, but it is also advisable to carry a small amount of cash.
Is there anything I should note about clothing when travelling to Mongolia?
Mongolia has large temperature differences between day and night, so we recommend bringing plenty of warm clothing and dressing in layers, using the "onion layering" method. When entering religious sites, pay particular attention to dress codes. Before visiting temples, you should remove your hat and shoes, and at stupas or other places of worship, you should walk around them clockwise as a sign of respect.
Is there internet or mobile phone signal in Mongolia?
The signal is stable in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, but coverage is limited, and the signal may cut out when you leave the capital for the countryside. You can buy a SIM card locally—SIM cards (such as Mobicom and UNITEL) are available right at the airport in Mongolia—or activate international roaming. Some hotels and accommodations may provide Wi-Fi, but the speed is limited.
What should I be aware of regarding food? Is Mongolian food suitable for vegetarians?
As a nomadic people, Mongolian cuisine consists mainly of meat, dairy products, and noodle dishes. The most famous include Khorkhog (barbecued meat), Khorkhog Makh (hand-held mutton), and Urum (clotted cream). Although vegetarian options are limited, there are also noodles, fried rice, and soy products to serve as staples. If you have special dietary requirements, please let us know in advance so we can make arrangements as early as possible.
What is the state of toilet hygiene in Mongolia?
Toilets in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, are clean and well-maintained with good sanitary conditions, but in remote rural areas, toilet facilities are more basic. We recommend bringing your own wet wipes and toilet paper, as well as hand sanitiser or waterless hand gel.
What is the language of Mongolia? Is it easy to communicate in English?
The official language is Mongolian, but most guides and locals speak fluent English, so basic travel communication poses no problems.
How are the camel and horse rides arranged? Are they safe?
The horse-riding and camel-riding experiences each last about 1 hour. Each camel (or horse) carries only one rider, and every 1 to 4 participants are led by a professional wrangler/camel guide. The activity is very safe. Before the experience begins, staff will provide both verbal explanations and written instructions to ensure participants master the correct riding techniques and key safety points.
Do I need to purchase special insurance for the camel/horse rides?
Please be sure to confirm that any insurance you purchase yourself covers "amateur sporting activities" (i.e. non-professional competitive events).
How long is the longest drive? Are there rest stops along the way?
Journeys in Mongolia's countryside are generally quite long overall. The longest drives are:
- Day 3: Terelj National Park to the Bayan Gobi Desert, about 6 to 7 hours
- Day 6: Kharkhorin to Ulaanbaatar, passing through Khustai National Park, with a total drive of about 7 to 8 hours
Rest arrangements: Several stops will be arranged along the way for everyone to use the restroom, buy coffee, or step out to relax and take photos at scenic spots.
Will the ride be very bumpy?
Most sections of the route are paved roads. Only on the way to the Orkhon Valley, and while touring Khustai National Park, are there each about 45 minutes to 1 hour of gravel road.
