The cost includes travel from Longyearbyen to the Arctic aboard Quark Expeditions' 199-passenger mid-sized ship, the Ultramarine, with a 1:6 guide-to-guest ratio, a guaranteed 2 landings per day to explore the ice, and three meals a day. You may also join optional activities at your own expense, such as kayaking and sea canoeing. Flights from your home to Finland are at your own expense.
How do you get to the Arctic? What are the recommended flights?
Departing from Helsinki, Finland, head to Svalbard to explore Spitsbergen aboard Quark Expeditions' 199-passenger mid-sized ship, the Ultramarine, equipped with stabilisers and 24-hour medical support. What are the seasons and temperatures like in the Arctic?
The Arctic tourism season mainly falls during the Northern Hemisphere summer from May to September, with September featuring the following characteristics:
- Temperatures usually range between 0°C and -10°C, dropping close to freezing at night
- It is the best season for viewing the Northern Lights
- Magnificent scenery, with snowfields, ice sheets and polar wildlife to admire
To cope with the changing weather, we will provide:
- Polar jacket
- 24-hour medical support available on board
- The ship is equipped with stabilisers to reduce the effects of wind and waves
What should I do if I get seasick or fall ill on board?
There are comprehensive medical support arrangements on board:
- A medical team is stationed on board 24 hours a day and can provide immediate assistance to ease seasickness discomfort
- We recommend that before departure you:
- Consult your personal doctor for advice
- Prepare anti-seasickness medication
Is the Arctic very cold? What should I wear?
In the Arctic summer (the travel season), temperatures range from about 0°C to -10°C. The cruise ship Ultramarine is heated and the interior is warm, so travellers can wear comfortable casual clothing such as light shirts, trousers or jeans. In addition, for safety reasons, non-slip, well-fitting closed-toe shoes must be worn on board (no slippers, sandals or slip-on footwear) to ensure safe movement.
Do I need a visa to travel to the Arctic?
The journey begins in Helsinki, Finland, and we will cross the Svalbard archipelago to reach Spitsbergen. Travellers holding an HKSAR passport can enter Iceland visa-free and require no additional visa. Travellers should ensure their passport is valid for at least 6 months and have a return flight ticket ready for immigration inspection.
What currency is used in the Arctic?
The Arctic has no official currency. Transactions on board the cruise ship Ultramarine are generally conducted in US dollars (USD), and the ship also accepts credit cards, but we recommend bringing an appropriate amount of cash for unexpected needs.
Is there internet access on the cruise ship?
Yes, the Ultramarine cruise provides 5 GB of free data. Usage beyond 5 GB requires an additional purchase (US$30-40 per GB). Please note, however, that we sail to one of the most remote regions in the world, so internet connectivity relies on satellite equipment and may experience weakened signals or brief interruptions.
What voltage and plug types are used on the cruise?
Information on the plug types and voltage specifications available on the cruise will be provided at the pre-departure briefing, so please refer to it then.
