FAQ
What's included in the cost of a DeWonder Arctic tour?
The cost covers travel to the Arctic from Reykjavík, Iceland aboard Quark Expeditions' 138-passenger mid-sized vessel, the Ocean Explorer, with a 1:6 guide-to-guest ratio, a guaranteed 2 landings per day to explore the ice, and three meals daily. Additional activities such as kayaking and sea canoeing are also available at extra cost. Flights from your home to Iceland are at your own expense.
How do you get to the Arctic? What flights are recommended?
Departing from Reykjavík, Iceland, you'll cross the Denmark Strait to Greenland aboard Quark Expeditions' 138-passenger mid-sized vessel, the Ocean Explorer, which is equipped with stabilizers and 24-hour medical support.
Flight details will be announced upon confirmation.
What are the seasons and temperatures like in the Arctic?
The Arctic travel season falls mainly in the Northern Hemisphere summer, from May to September, with September featuring the following:
- Temperatures typically range between 0°C and -10°C, dropping close to freezing at night
- It's the best season for viewing the Northern Lights
- The scenery is magnificent, offering views of snowfields, ice sheets and polar wildlife
To cope with changing weather, we provide:
- Polar jackets
- 24-hour medical support is available on board
- The vessel is equipped with stabilizers to reduce the impact of wind and waves
What should I do if I get seasick or fall ill on board?
Comprehensive medical support is arranged on board:
- A medical team is on duty 24 hours a day and can provide immediate assistance to ease seasickness discomfort
- Before departure, we recommend:
- Consult your personal doctor for advice first
- Prepare anti-seasickness medication
Is it very cold in the Arctic? What should I wear?
During the Arctic summer (the travel season), temperatures range from about 0°C to -10°C. The Ocean Explorer cruise ship is heated, keeping the interior warm, so travellers can wear comfortable casual clothing such as light shirts, trousers or jeans. In addition, for safety reasons, closed-toe shoes with good grip and coverage must be worn on board (no flip-flops, sandals or loose-fitting footwear) to ensure safety while walking.
Do I need a visa to travel to the Arctic?
The journey begins in Reykjavík, Iceland, from where we will cross the Denmark Strait to Greenland. Travellers holding a HKSAR passport can enter Iceland visa-free, with no additional visa required. Travellers should ensure their passport is valid for at least 6 months and have a return flight ticket ready for immigration inspection.
What currency is used in the Arctic?
The Arctic has no official currency. Transactions on board the Ocean Explorer are generally conducted in US dollars (USD), and the ship also accepts credit cards, but we recommend bringing an appropriate amount of cash for emergencies.
Can I access the internet on the cruise ship?
Yes, the Ocean Explorer provides 5 GB of free data. Beyond 5 GB, additional data can be purchased (USD 30-40 per GB). Please note, however, that we are sailing to one of the most remote regions in the world, so internet connectivity relies on satellite equipment and may experience weakened signals or brief interruptions.
What are the voltage and socket types on the cruise ship?
Information regarding the socket types and voltage specifications available on board will be provided at the pre-departure briefing, so please refer to it at that time.
What is a day aboard the cruise like?
