FAQ
What is the weather like in Bhutan?
Bhutan has four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather, summer tends to be humid, and winter is cold and dry. Temperatures are lower in the mountains and at higher altitudes, especially at night, so we recommend bringing warm clothing.
Do I need a visa to travel to Bhutan?
Yes, a visa is required to travel to Bhutan. DeWonder will assist with the visa application to ensure a smooth entry for travellers. However, local immigration authorities are currently unable to process visas for BNO passports. If you wish to apply for a visa using a passport other than a Hong Kong SAR passport, please contact DeWonder customer service.
What is the currency of Bhutan? Can I use electronic payments or credit cards?
Bhutan's official currency is the Ngultrum (BTN), which is exchanged 1:1 with the Indian Rupee, so you may receive Indian Rupees as change. Local banks only accept US dollars issued after 2006. Some shops accept credit cards, but cash remains the most widely used payment method.
Are there any special dress requirements for visiting Bhutan?
Bhutanese culture is traditional and conservative. We recommend wearing long trousers or long skirts and avoiding shorts, paying particular attention to dress codes when entering religious sites. Before visiting temples, remove your hat and shoes. At stupas or other places of worship, walk clockwise as a sign of respect.
Do I need to take special precautions regarding Bhutan's high altitude?
Overall, Bhutan's altitude is not particularly high. Paro and Thimphu sit at an average elevation of about 2,200 to 2,400 metres, while Punakha is even lower at only around 1,200 metres. As a result, altitude sickness generally does not occur throughout the itinerary.
The must-see Tiger's Nest Monastery is located at an elevation of 3,120 metres, where mild headaches may occur. We recommend taking adequate rest during the itinerary and slowing your pace to allow your body to gradually acclimatise to the high altitude.
Is there internet or mobile signal in Bhutan? Can I use international roaming?
Major cities such as Thimphu and Paro have stable signal, but connections may drop in remote mountainous areas. You can purchase a local SIM card (such as B-Mobile or TashiCell) or activate international roaming. Some hotels offer Wi-Fi, but speeds are limited.
What should I be aware of regarding food? Is Bhutanese cuisine suitable for vegetarians?
Bhutanese cuisine tends to be spicy, with common staples including Ema Datshi (chilli cheese), rice, and curry. At the same time, Bhutan also offers plenty of vegetarian options. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know in advance so that we can make arrangements as early as possible.
What flights are available to Bhutan?
Bhutan's only international airport is located in Paro, and currently only Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines operate international routes. We will confirm the flight arrangements 3 weeks before departure. Rest assured, both airlines have extensive operating experience and can ensure a safe and reliable flying experience.
Is hiking possible in Bhutan? Will it be very difficult?
The hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery takes about 5 to 6 hours round trip and is of moderate difficulty. We have specially scheduled it for the second-to-last day of the itinerary, so that travellers can first acclimatise to the high altitude. There are several rest stops along the way, with local guides and DeWonder Travel tour leaders accompanying and caring for you throughout.
If you would rather not walk the entire way, you can choose to ride a horse up the mountain one way (you will still need to walk down), at a cost of about USD 45, payable in local cash, and we will help arrange it. Everything is well organised, so you can join with peace of mind.
What is the language of Bhutan? Is it convenient to communicate in English?
The official language is Dzongkha, but most guides and locals can speak English fluently, so basic travel communication poses no barrier.
