Trip Overview
【Highlights of DeWonder Travel's Central Asia Five-Country Itinerary】
All five Central Asian countries were once Soviet republics, sharing deeply intertwined histories, yet after independence they took vastly different paths, resulting in distinct cultures and landscapes. Among them, Uzbekistan has been relatively untouched by globalisation, preserving intact its ancient Silk Road palaces and monasteries. With locals still often wearing traditional robes, travelling in Uzbekistan feels like stepping back in time.
Turkmenistan is one of the lesser-known of the five Central Asian countries. The closed-door policy adopted from the founding president onwards makes it difficult for outsiders to visit, lending it an air of endless mystery. The giant flaming crater in the desert, the "Door to Hell", is a wonder that countless travellers flock to see. Neighbouring Tajikistan, equally conservative and closed off, is renowned for its towering, magnificent mountain scenery and its rich Persian and Turkic imperial history and culture. A trip to Tajikistan reveals the country's crucial role along the Silk Road from ancient times to the present, as well as the profound cultural fusion the Silk Road brought. Kyrgyzstan is the relatively more open of the five Central Asian countries, hailed as the "Switzerland of Central Asia", boasting alpine lakes such as the famous Issyk-Kul and a unique traditional nomadic culture.
As the largest of the five Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan is also the most economically developed, and in recent years has devoted itself to modernisation. The capital Astana blends Islamic, Soviet-modern and traditional styles into a unique architecture, which together with the lofty peaks of the Tian Shan mountains, makes it an unmissable destination. In a single journey, traverse all five Central Asian countries and experience the region's diverse cultures and glorious history.
