The Arctic travel season runs mainly during the Northern Hemisphere summer from May to September, with September offering the following highlights:
- Temperatures typically range between 0°C and -10°C, dropping close to freezing at night
- It's the best season for viewing the Northern Lights
- Magnificent scenery, with snowfields, ice sheets and polar wildlife to admire
To cope with changing weather conditions, we provide:
- Polar jackets
- 24-hour medical support on board
- The vessel is equipped with stabilisers to reduce the impact of wind and waves
What should I do if I get seasick or fall ill on board?
There are comprehensive medical support arrangements on board:
- A medical team is on duty 24 hours a day and can provide immediate assistance to relieve seasickness discomfort
- We recommend that before departure you:
- Consult your personal doctor for advice
- Prepare anti-seasickness medication
Is it very cold in the Arctic? What should I wear?
During the Arctic summer (the travel season), temperatures range from around 0°C to -10°C. The cruise ships Ocean Explorer and Ultramarine are heated, so the interior is warm and travellers can wear comfortable casual clothing, such as light shirts, trousers or jeans. In addition, for safety reasons, non-slip, well-covered closed-toe shoes must be worn on board (no slippers, sandals or slip-on footwear) to ensure safety while walking.
Do I need a visa to travel to the Arctic?
The journey begins in Reykjavík, Iceland, from where we cross the Denmark Strait to Greenland. Travellers holding a Hong Kong SAR (HKSAR) passport can enter Iceland visa-free, with no additional visa required. Travellers should ensure their passport is valid for at least 6 months and have a return air ticket ready for immigration checks.
What is the currency in the Arctic?
There is no official currency in the Arctic. Transactions aboard the Ocean Explorer or Ultramarine are generally conducted in US dollars (USD), and the ships also accept credit cards. However, we recommend bringing an appropriate amount of cash for unexpected needs.
Is internet available on board?
Yes. The Ocean Explorer or Ultramarine provides 5 GB of free data; beyond 5 GB, additional data can be purchased (USD 30–40 per GB). Please note, however, that we sail to one of the most remote regions in the world, so internet connectivity relies on satellite equipment and may experience weakened signals or brief interruptions.
What is the voltage and socket type on board?
Information regarding the socket types and voltage specifications available on board will be provided at the pre-departure briefing. Please refer to it at that time.
