Trip Overview
【Highlights of the DeWonder Travel Five-Country Central Asia Itinerary】
All five Central Asian countries were once Soviet republics, sharing deeply intertwined histories, yet after independence they each took markedly different paths, with distinct customs and landscapes. Among them, Uzbekistan has been less affected by globalisation, preserving intact the palaces and monasteries of the ancient Silk Road; together with the locals who often wear traditional robes, travelling in Uzbekistan feels like stepping back in time.
Turkmenistan is one of the lesser-known of the five Central Asian countries. Its closed-door policy, upheld since its founding president, makes it difficult for outsiders to visit, lending it an air of boundless mystery. The giant flaming crater in the desert, the "Gates of Hell," is an extraordinary wonder that many travellers flock to. Equally conservative and closed off is its neighbour Tajikistan, renowned for its towering, magnificent mountain scenery and its rich Persian and Ottoman imperial history and culture. Travelling to Tajikistan lets you witness the country's important role on the Silk Road from ancient times to the present, and the profound cultural fusion the Silk Road brought. Kyrgyzstan is a relatively open one among the five Central Asian countries, hailed as the "Switzerland of Central Asia," boasting high-altitude lakes such as the famous Issyk-Kul and its unique traditional nomadic culture.
Kazakhstan, the largest of the five Central Asian countries, is also the most economically developed, and in recent years has devoted itself to modern development. The capital Astana blends Islamic, Soviet-style modern, and traditional architecture into a unique style, and together with the lofty peaks of the Tian Shan mountains, it has become a not-to-be-missed travel destination. Journey through all five Central Asian countries in one trip and experience Central Asia's diverse cultures and glorious history.

FAQ
What is the climate like in Central Asia?
The climate in Central Asia varies considerably. Winters are cold and dry, summers are hot with little rain, while spring and autumn are more comfortable. Some regions have a continental climate with large temperature differences between day and night, especially in desert and mountainous areas where nights can feel cold. Travellers are advised to prepare appropriate clothing according to the season—warm garments for winter, and sun protection and moisturising products for summer.
Do I need a visa to travel to Central Asia?
Visa requirements vary among the Central Asian countries. Kazakhstan only requires completing an arrival form upon entry, with no special visa application needed; Turkmenistan requires a letter of invitation and a visa on arrival, which DeWonder Travel will assist travellers in arranging to ensure smooth entry. However, the local immigration authorities are currently unable to process visas for BNO and Macao SAR passports. If you are applying for a visa with a passport other than the Hong Kong SAR passport, please contact DeWonder customer service for enquiries.
Can I use electronic payment or credit cards?
Central Asia relies mainly on cash transactions. Travellers are advised to exchange US dollars in Hong Kong first, and can then change into local currency at the airport or city centre upon arrival. Please note that local vendors may refuse old or damaged US banknotes, so ensure your notes are in good condition when exchanging. Some local shops accept payment in US dollars, so it is advisable to carry a small amount of US dollar change for unexpected needs.
The applicability of credit cards and ATM cards varies by country. UnionPay ATM cards work only in Kazakhstan, while ATM cards on the PLUS/Cirrus networks can be used in both Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. However, ATMs are relatively scarce in the cities, and not all shops accept credit card payments, so it is advisable to carry sufficient cash. In Turkmenistan, ATM cards and credit cards cannot be used, and all transactions must be paid in cash.
Are there any special dress requirements for travelling to Central Asia?
Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are all predominantly Islamic countries, but local women are not required to wear headscarves. Some mosques have dress requirements: both men and women need to cover their shoulders and knees, and women need to cover their hair, so it is advisable to bring a headscarf just in case. Some areas have more relaxed rules, where a jacket or hat for covering is also acceptable.
What should I be aware of when accessing the internet in Central Asia?
Internet conditions vary across the Central Asian countries. Turkmenistan has more internet restrictions—WhatsApp, WeChat, Facebook, and Instagram are all blocked, and only Google and Google Maps are accessible. Recommended local VPN apps include LetsVPN, NPV Tunnel, and VPN EXPRESS (all paid services), but VPN connections are unstable and cannot be guaranteed to work. Local communication is usually done via Skype, which does not require a VPN. Most hotels offer free Wi-Fi, but connection speeds are slow, and there is no signal along highways and in remote areas. If you wish to purchase a local internet plan, the cost is about 30 USD—please notify us in advance so we can help arrange it.
Is Central Asia unsafe? Is there any risk of war or unrest?
At present, the five Central Asian countries are politically stable, with good public safety for tourism. Tourism in places like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan is well developed—these are not war zones or high-risk areas. Throughout the journey, we arrange a local team familiar with the roads and languages to accompany you, and we monitor the latest safety information daily to ensure travellers' peace of mind.
Will the language barrier cause inconvenience? Is English useful?
Central Asia mostly communicates in Russian or local languages, and English is not widely spoken. However, we arrange an English/Chinese-speaking tour leader throughout the trip, along with local guides fluent in the local languages, to handle all communication and guiding, so you can immerse yourself in the local culture with peace of mind and without language pressure.
Will we spend too much time on the road? How is the driving arranged?
Because Central Asia is geographically vast, some segments require long-distance travel. However, we break the drives into sections and pair them with:
- Scenic stops along the way (such as ceramic villages, markets, or lakes)
- Daily driving is kept mainly within 3–4 hours, with comfortable private vehicles provided
- Domestic flights are used on certain stretches to ease the fatigue of travel
Will it be too tiring? Is it suitable for older travellers or those with limited stamina?
This itinerary is designed as a "cultural exploration" journey, with ample rest time each day and no consecutive high-intensity activities. Most seniors can complete the trip smoothly; if you have particular physical needs, please let us know in advance. Our journeys also include adjustable free time, which will be marked in the daily itinerary before departure so travellers can tailor their level of participation.
Will the food suit my taste? What local dishes do you recommend?
Central Asian cuisine centres on grilled meats, pilaf, yoghurt, and various flatbreads, with vegetarian options also available. In larger cities, you'll also find Chinese, Korean, and Western restaurants, so most travellers adapt easily.
